Stress is a part of life, but how we manage it mak Stress is a part of life, but how we manage it makes all the difference. #yourmentalhealthmatters
On April 19th, 2025, I had the honor of attending On April 19th, 2025, I had the honor of attending the 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 in collaboration with the 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘁𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀. I was invited as one of the expert speakers to share on the topic: “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡.”

The goal of this impactful event was threefold:
1. To highlight the importance of 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬.
2. To provide the audience with 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 for navigating life’s challenges.
3. To offer 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐬.

As I spoke and connected with attendees, one thing became clear to me. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡. There is a deep need to bridge the gap between parents and children, to better understand each other’s mental and emotional needs, and to normalize taking time off simply for 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠.

We must begin to 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐠𝐦𝐚 that has long surrounded mental health in our communities. African parents must be willing to 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, to recognize that coping in today’s world looks different, and that supporting our children’s mental health requires empathy, awareness, and willingness to grow alongside them.

It was truly heartwarming to meet so many passionate individuals and engage with various African communities who are ready for change. I’m grateful for the opportunity and remain hopeful for a future where 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞.

Attending the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) 3 Attending the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) 30th Annual Conference on April 16th -18th was a powerful and inspiring experience. It was wonderful to connect with so many autism and disability advocates. People who are deeply committed to creating more inclusive communities and amplifying the voices of those often unheard.

The MNLEND program has long been a proud community partner in support of this important conference, and this year was no exception. As the MNLEND Coordinator, it was an honor to table at the event, engaging with attendees who stopped by to learn more about the MNLEND program. These moments allowed me to connect and listen to personal disability and mental health stories and experiences, each one a reminder of why this work matters so much.

I was also joined by several MNLEND Fellows and alumni, who took the opportunity to attend sessions, network, and even present at the conference. Their presence added depth and representation to the conversations around autism, equity, and systems change.

One of the key messages that stayed with me in attending the conference was the call for continued advocacy for inclusivity and the importance of reaching out to legislators.

This powerful takeaway served as a reminder for all of us, advocates, professionals, and community members alike, to keep our legislators informed and accountable. It reignited a shared urgency to speak up and ensure disability voices are not only heard but prioritized.

The conference was also a sobering reflection that, while we’ve made progress, we still have a long way to go in this country when it comes to disability rights and true inclusion.

It affirmed the need to keep fighting, through policy, education, and community action, until inclusion becomes the norm, and not the exception.

God is taking care of you, even when it seems like God is taking care of you, even when it seems like you’re all alone. Just stay truthful in all you do.

Attending Minnesota Disability Day at the Capitol Attending Minnesota Disability Day at the Capitol was an incredibly inspiring experience. It was great to meet so many disability advocates who are tirelessly working to create a more inclusive society.

The MNLEND Fellows also joined the event, and many of them took the opportunity to speak directly with their legislators, advocating for policies that support individuals with disabilities and their families.

One of the most powerful moments of the day came from a speaker who emphasized the word “Remember.” He reminded us that to remember means you are not forgotten. He urged advocates to remind their legislators of the promises made to the disability community and to remember to inspire themselves to live fully and with purpose. His words were a powerful call to action, reinforcing the importance of persistence in advocacy.

The rally was a reminder that while we have made progress, we still have a long way to go in this country when it comes to disability rights and true inclusion. Events like these are critical in keeping the momentum alive, ensuring that disability voices are not only heard but also acted upon at every level of government.
